BOOK REVIEW: Devil in the Dust by Cara Luecht

BOOK REVIEW: Devil in the Dust by Cara Luecht

Let me provide you a cautionary tale of book reviews, best friends, and Sims.  My book bestie, Kristin, spent last weekend trying to convince me to play Sims.  There may have been some sing-songy coaxing, some allusion to a Sims blog post I ‘had‘ to put up, and slight coercion.  There may have been suggestions that this particular review wasn’t due for several more days and I had plenty of time.  There may have been protests (by me) but I fell for the lines and well…  That leads us to late Wednesday night fighting with myself and swearing I’ll never listen to her again as I try to finish this book for tomorrow.  My latest (and soon to change again) work schedule gets me home later than I have time to do the necessary things before my preferred bedtime.  This makes reading take doubly long during the week.  Man, though […]

BOOK REVIEW: Almond Street Mission by June Foster

BOOK REVIEW: Almond Street Mission by June Foster

I really wanted to love this book.  The synopsis drew me into something that I thought would be a heart-wrenching story of faith and glory and hope.  I wanted a book of hope with a snag of mystery with the missing brother.  I wanted a book of faith with the Mission and the men it served.  I wanted some intrigue with the romance between Glorilyn and Jer.  I got some of those things but not enough to make up for the thing I didn’t get. Let’s talk about those things.  I fell like this book assumed that certain things were known.  Back stories, hidden story lines, relationships, to some degree even faith but we’ll address that later.  Without giving spoilers, let’s just say that the hints I took for Jer’s real story was not what it ended up being.  The back story and relationship between Glorilyn and her friend Lori.  […]

BOOK REVIEW: Lydia, Woman of Philippi by Diana Wallis Taylor

BOOK REVIEW: Lydia, Woman of Philippi by Diana Wallis Taylor

I feel like I’m on a Lydia kick this year.  This is the second book I’ve read on this Biblical woman since August and both are different as night and day.  We know Lydia as a savvy business woman in a time that women didn’t run businesses.  We assume she was possibly a widow as she ran a business without male oversight or protection.  We know Lydia as a dyer of purple.  Sorry I’ll NEVER understand this love of purple, totally not for me.  We know that mostly likely, at some point she lived in or was from Thyatira.  We know her as the first convert in Europe who opened her home to Paul, Silas, Timothy and those traveling with them.  We can make historical assumptions of where she was from, how she lived, her background and family.  But we don’t know.  And hence we have books about this amazing […]

Goodreads Monday

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. To take part, you simply choose a random book from your TBR and show it off. Don’t forget to check out her blog and link back to Lauren’s Page Turners. As a teen this was one of my favorite book series.  I checked anything by Janette Oke out of the church library over and over..and over.  I few years ago I stumbled across the first book in this series for my Kindle but have neglected to make time to read it again. Josh Jones realizes his family isn’t typical, but it’s the only life he’s ever known. Aunt Lou, Gramps, Uncle Charlie, Grandpa–they all have shaped the young man he has become. But as he grows into manhood, Josh begins to face important questions about life, love, and faith. What’s an old favorite, doesn’t have to go as far […]
