Reflections: Merry Christmas

Reflections: Merry Christmas

As many of us are bustling about preparing to travel to or host our friends and family it’s easy to forget the bigger picture.  It’s easy to get lost in checking our shopping lists that no one has been forgotten, it’s easy to get lost in wrapping and bagging all the gifts and trinkets from our lists, it’s easy to get lost in cooking and serving our family and friends.  It’s easy to get lost in hanging the lights and lighting tree.  It’s easy to forget that so long ago the ultimate gift was literally born in a barn with no special meal, no decorated rooms, his first visitors some animals and shepherds. I’m frequently accused of being Scrinchy Groughy (a mix up I offhandedly invent a few years back).  I’m not into all the Christmas hubbub.  I don’t deck the halls so to speak.  I’m more a Thanksgiving gal […]

BOOK REVIEW: 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep

BOOK REVIEW: 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep

Having time between finishing this book and writing this review is bad for my word flow.  I had time to think.  Thinking and reviews for me do not go hand in hand.  I lose that fresh off the book visceral reaction that tends to make a lot more sense in words than when I think.  I had deep thoughts, I really did … last night.  I’ll be blunt, the mystery left me wanting – some too vague and some to obvious.  The romance was interesting.  The twists were slightly cliche but not over the top.  But overall, honestly, it held up as an intriguing story that kept me invested to the very end. Let’s talk nitty gritty.  I feel like the characters were missing something in their overall development.  I got an idea of who they were but the other guests at Bleakly were not quite living and breathing for […]

BOOK REVIEW: The Christmas Blessing by Melody Carlson

BOOK REVIEW: The Christmas Blessing by Melody Carlson

I have such mixed feelings about this book.  I’ve never read Melody Carlson before but I keep hearing amazing things.  When the opportunity to review ‘The Christmas Blessing’ came my way I jumped on it.  A Christmas story by a much spoken of author, how could I resist?  While I liked the overall writing style and voice of this author this story should not have been my starter pack so to speak.  It’s still a pretty amazing book but there were a few things that I couldn’t overlook. Can we say predictable?  With only one notable exception (that I will not spoiler you with) I knew where the story was headed at every turn.  It may have meandered a few times but it never left the track outside that one time.  Predictability and cliche are kissin’ cousins.  Poor girl from a questionable family meets rich boy who is surrounded by […]

BOOK REVIEW: An Amish Christmas by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, Barbara Cameron and Kelly Long

BOOK REVIEW: An Amish Christmas by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, Barbara Cameron and Kelly Long

A Choice to Forgive by Beth Wiseman **** I’m going to just say it…this novella was the perfect opener to this collection.  I’ve yet to read anything by this author that I haven’t absolutely fallen in love with.  And with one small caveat, this novella is no exception.  An unexpected, heart rending, 18 year old blast from the past walks through Lydia’s door one night just before Thanksgiving.  Her first love, the man who left it all behind and broke her heart on Christmas Eve (no less) eighteen years prior is back.  Back to reclaim his life in his Amish roots.  Back to tear her heart into little pieces all over again.  Back.  She thought she had moved on, actually marrying his brother Elam and raising their three children alone after Elam’s passing two years prior.  Back to remind her that her heart is not truly healed.  I loved that […]

BOOK REVIEW: Imagine…The Great Flood by Matt Koceich

I first accidentally stumbled across this book earlier this summer and immediately thought of Munch.  He is just as much a bookworm as I am and can spend hours reading, if there’s no electronics available.  However, the summer dissipated into weeks with his Dad and time in California with his grandparents.  I was alternating a day here or there with his Mom.  Makes it hard to really dive into a book of substance.  Before I knew it school was back in session and with his alternating weekends between Mom and Dad I was taking a random once a weekend a month or even a stolen day here or there.  Not conducive to diving into a book of substance.  Then I was working Saturdays and that gave me a scant one day of the weekend to spend with the Minions.  Not really easy to dive into a book of substance.  Suddenly […]
