BOOK REVIEW: The Sound of Rain by Sarah Loudin Thomas

When I started reading this book I was on the phone with Kristin (it’s a thing, just embrace it).  She hasn’t read it yet and I was so into this story I kept telling her she needed to start it ‘right now’.  Just to chapter 7 so we can talk about this thing.  Just start it so I can get your opinion on this other thing.  She still hasn’t started it yet and I’ve finished it just as enamored by the book’s first sentence as I was the last. Imagine waking up in the most complete total darkness that you can imagine.  So dark that the idea of light becomes foreign.  Literally no light, fragments of anything resembling light.  So dark you aren’t even sure you are alive.  And that shoe you feel touching your head?  It’s your own, but it’s still attached to your body.  OK, I think I […]

BOOK REVIEW: Strains of Silence by Bethany Kaczmarek

Before I even get into this review there are disclaimers that I need to provide.  This book could be a ginormous trigger on several issues for some readers.  I say ginormous because while it is triggering it is also redeeming.  A book of hope and overcoming through faith.  This book tackles the very heavy topics of dating/domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault.  It’s not graphic but it’s not cozy either.  Statistically, if these topics don’t affect you personally they definitely affect people you know.  Christian’s are not immune from these traumas and they are not set aside to just those ‘of the world’ so to speak. I loved this book.  It was told with a refreshing honesty and depth that is hard to find in Christian fiction that deals with heavy topics.  I’ve read more than my fair share of glossy ‘Jesus heals all’ books, both fiction and nonfiction.  Guess […]

BOOK REVIEW: The Lacemaker by Laura Frantz

Nothing burns my buttons more than having to ‘sit’ on a book when I finish it.  I finished this book last night when I was without a computer and time on my hands … to start another book of course.  I had such grand thoughts and emotional things to share about this book.  A lot of it frustration but in my head it was engaging and somewhat entertaining.  And now?  It’s gone.  Gone in the ether that is my oft forgetful brain.  Gone in the world of thinking.  I try really hard not to think ya know?  And here we go. I had high hopes for this book based on the synopsis.  Heck, I even liked the cover and I’m not a cover junkie like some people (ahem, Kristin).  I was expecting some intensity, some action, and even a fresh perspective (you know, Tory) from an engaging and interesting period […]
