BOOK REVIEW: An Inconvenient Beauty by Kristi Ann Hunter

BOOK REVIEW: An Inconvenient Beauty by Kristi Ann Hunter

When I saw this book I knew I had to read it.  I didn’t pay enough attention to the fact that it was fourth in a series.  In my goal to read ‘all the books’ this was just a minor hiccup, not a setback.  Until it was.  All the books people, it’s harder than it sounds.  I found other books slipping in and pushing this book back because there were three that needed to be read.  I found the end of the year creeping up on me and books that were still waiting in the wings for their turn to shine.  I took a leap and crossed my toes and dove into ‘An Inconvenient Beauty’ hoping on hopes that it would read well as a stand alone novel.  I was not disappointed, nor was I lost, as I flew through the pages.  Yes, the experience would have been enriched with […]

BOOK REVIEW: All She Left Behind by Jane Kirkpatrick

BOOK REVIEW: All She Left Behind by Jane Kirkpatrick

This book was not at all what I expected.  The synopsis did not set me up for the book that I read.  Before I get into that though there’s a couple of warnings I need to throw out here.  This book is based on a real person.  It is a work of fiction but we all know that there is always a nugget of truth even in pure fiction.  While based on a real person and a lot of research was put into her there is not a play by play account of Jennie’s life.  Much can be ascertained from historical records and those ideas are used to create this book.  That being said there is mention of spousal abuse.  There is mention of alcoholism and drug abuse.  These are things that may be offensive to some Christian readers as well as triggering to other readers.  I do not in […]

BOOK REVIEW: My Little Words Devotional by Michelle Prater Burke Illustrated by Holli Conger

BOOK REVIEW: My Little Words Devotional by Michelle Prater Burke Illustrated by Holli Conger

Let’s talk the idea of toddler and children’s devotional books.  You don’t see many of them.  I don’t know why that is but it’s a trend that needs to catch on.  There’s devotionals for women, moms, dads, men, college students, teens, even t’weens.  There are devotionals for different career paths.  There are devotionals everywhere but few focus on our younger and eager to learn children.  Learning how to communicate with God and learning scripture at a young age translates into a stronger walk into adulthood, in my opinion.  There are things about this book that I love and things that left me disappointed. Let’s talk disappointment first.  When I think of ‘devotional’ I think of a life application that is derived from scripture.  I think of personal anecdotes that correspond with the intention behind the scripture.  I think of the author’s takeaway that leads itself into finding your own relevant […]

BOOK REVIEW: 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep

BOOK REVIEW: 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep

Having time between finishing this book and writing this review is bad for my word flow.  I had time to think.  Thinking and reviews for me do not go hand in hand.  I lose that fresh off the book visceral reaction that tends to make a lot more sense in words than when I think.  I had deep thoughts, I really did … last night.  I’ll be blunt, the mystery left me wanting – some too vague and some to obvious.  The romance was interesting.  The twists were slightly cliche but not over the top.  But overall, honestly, it held up as an intriguing story that kept me invested to the very end. Let’s talk nitty gritty.  I feel like the characters were missing something in their overall development.  I got an idea of who they were but the other guests at Bleakly were not quite living and breathing for […]

BOOK REVIEW: The Christmas Blessing by Melody Carlson

BOOK REVIEW: The Christmas Blessing by Melody Carlson

I have such mixed feelings about this book.  I’ve never read Melody Carlson before but I keep hearing amazing things.  When the opportunity to review ‘The Christmas Blessing’ came my way I jumped on it.  A Christmas story by a much spoken of author, how could I resist?  While I liked the overall writing style and voice of this author this story should not have been my starter pack so to speak.  It’s still a pretty amazing book but there were a few things that I couldn’t overlook. Can we say predictable?  With only one notable exception (that I will not spoiler you with) I knew where the story was headed at every turn.  It may have meandered a few times but it never left the track outside that one time.  Predictability and cliche are kissin’ cousins.  Poor girl from a questionable family meets rich boy who is surrounded by […]
