FBI Agent Jude Camden handles every aspect of his job with by-the-book professionalism. There’s no reason why his latest assignment—which calls for him to pose as the boyfriend of perfumer Gemma Clare—should be any different.
Except Gemma is different. She’s creative, bold, and feisty. And as soon as she meets Jude, she wants to loosen him up, wrinkle his perfect shirts, and test every ounce of his towering self-control.
The FBI has an iron-clad rule against romances between those working together on operations. Jude’s never met a rule he didn’t respect. But adhering to this one is going to be tough because, as time goes by, he finds Gemma more and more irresistible.
Buckle up! It’s going to be a rocky road.
Sometimes reading (or listening) to a book series back to back gives you everything you ever wanted. There’s a reason us readers are always on the watch for the next book, waiting (sometimes) impatiently for teasers and updates from our favorite authors. But sometimes, going straight from one right after the other misses something. If I’m being completely honest I finished listening to Memory Lane and about 30 minutes later jumped right into Rocky Road. And I struggled for the first about 15%. I didn’t allow myself time to settle from one before running headlong into the next and didn’t allow time to allow for that transition to a new brother, a new situation, a new relationship with these characters. I mean I’d met them before but. . . sometimes having to impatiently wait for a new book is actually in our best interest (ugh). However, by about 18% I was in, all in though with the title not gonna lie I was really wishing I could eat some Rocky Road Ice Cream (I settled for chocolate chip).
Let’s be honest this is fake romance or complete opposites meets instalove meets slow burn. It all started as Jude (whom I really liked already) sets up a fake romance with Gemma because of who she is and how she can help with a case. They quickly have chemistry, even if Gemma is the only one to acknowledge it, but they stretch it out because well agents can’t date someone he’s on a case with. And they get together then not together and I swear they were trying to be as cool as Jeremiah and Remy but here we are. Their sheer personality differences make me hesitant of their future. I also love that Fiona’s story (aka Mom) continued to layer from Memory Lane and I am in heavy anticipation of seeing it play into Uneasy Street, though that could be awkward as Max isn’t her son and there’s drama there but she also embraces him since he’s Jude’s best friend. How’s that for random run on thoughts? I’m great with those!
Honestly, it’s the side quests in this book that really gripped me. Gemma’s great grandma was a Code Girl in WW! Like no one new that until now even though she’s a 102 with early Alzheimers but here we are. Great Granny had more secrets than that but you can read for that. However, the intro to Code Girls has me Goggling like crazy as now that’s a sub genre I need to read. Overall though, truth, This book series has played so seamlessly between the brothers with well developed characters and story lines that I can’t wait to read the next one but I also don’t want to read the next one as then that’s the end of the Camden brothers. And there’s also the anticipation of how Max will end up in the hospital since that’s just another background theme to explore!
