This encouraging story shows how life changes when we learn to value those who are differently abled and to champion the power of thoughtfulness.
Author Dorena Williamson explores the need to be "thoughtFULL"—full of thoughtfulness and awareness, particularly with those who have special needs. In this delightful story, it's awards day at school, and Ahanu (a boy with Down Syndrome) earns the award for being thoughtful. Later, when his friend Joshua sees others making fun of Ahanu, it's Joshua's turn to be thoughtful by supporting his differently abled friend. While doing so, Joshua learns important lessons about friendship, disabilities, and the value we each have as God's children.
I love the ability to nab up the perfect kid’s book now and again. While I may not have full-time Minions of Mischief to hoard books for anymore I do still have other Minions in my world. Tell ya a secret but keep it to yourself. . . this book reached out to me from the list at B&H as I thought it would make the perfect gift to add to my niece’s collection. And it is. Oh gravy it totally is. She might need a bit more maturity before she’s ready for it but I know that she’ll love it. Let me tell you why.
From the cover the illustrations are inviting and colorful and engaging. Even before you get to the words you are drawn to the children (and adults) in the story through the artwork. When you add the words you find a story about a couple of young friends. One happens to have been born with Downs Syndrome, the other happens to be born without it. One is really good at painting and running the football, the other happens to not be so great at those things. Does it really matter which of they boys can do those things? Not really but to make you feel better that boy was Ahanu. Ahanu also happened to win the Heart award at school for his thoughtfulness. Something a couple of other boys didn’t agree with, they felt like he didn’t deserve it because he was different.
This book has so many take-aways (even for the adult reader!) and opportunities for discussion and learning and growth. That is just in the story! There’s also the nifty Parent Connection page at the back that provides scripture verses, discussion aids, and thoughtful questions to explore with your young readers. Perfect for ages 4 to 8 as children begin to notice the world, and people, around them. Perfect to read with a Minion or to have read to you by a Minion this book is sure to be well loved. And teach our Minions about loving others, where they are as they are with all the strengths and weaknesses we all have. I’m thrilled to have it in my collection for a little while until a special little girl is ready to add it to her collection.
