One of them is a prisoner and one of them is free. The same one.
Bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly and Army Captain Jesse Christensen are on opposite sides of a battle. When martial law is declared, Jesse and his platoon are sent to Meryn’s city to keep an eye on the Christians and make sure they are not stepping outside of the confines of the law.
Fiery and quick-tempered, Meryn chafes under the curfew and other restrictions to her freedom. Jesse is equally amused, intrigued, and terrified by her spirit, knowing she could find herself in prison if she shows defiance to the wrong soldier.
His worst fears are realized when she commits a crime he cannot protect her from. Now they both face an uncertain future, and the very real threat of losing everything, including their lives. With time running out, Jesse works feverishly to convince the authorities to show leniency to Meryn. And to convince her that love can overcome any barrier that lies between them.

Their Secrets Protect Them … But Secrets are Hard to Keep
No one in the army can find out that Captain Jesse Christensen has become a believer. He and bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly are forced to meet in secret, facing imprisonment or worse if they are found together. Their relationship deepens, but so does Lieutenant Gallagher’s hatred for the Christians in their city. As Gallagher’s power grows, it becomes clear that his connections go much further up the chain of command than anyone realized, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.
Meryn wants to give her heart to Jesse fully, but her past holds her back. Although circumstances conspire to keep her silent, she needs to tell him her secret. When he finds out what she has been keeping from him, nothing will stand between them anymore.
Or nothing will ever be the same.

In the Midst of all the Fear and Confusion, Only One Thing is Clear … This Isn’t Over Yet
Jesse Christensen is out of the army, but the real battle has just begun. Major Gallagher has taken over the city and his oppression of believers has intensified. But is Gallagher acting in a professional capacity, or is he carrying out a personal vendetta?
Meryn O’Reilly faces a dark and uncertain future after shocking revelations devastate her life. She is determined to follow God’s call, but her plans could cost her everything. She and Jesse struggle to surrender fully to a God who is always in control, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

Review
If you remember I highlight this series back in October. It was the first time it had come across my radar and I knew then and there I had to read this series. Welp, it’s right about three months later and here I am, reading this series! I’m super excited to bring you the entire series throughout this week. I mean, Revelations based fiction isn’t knew, who *hasn’t* read the Left Behind series. Post-apocalyptic fiction is popular in both mainstream and Christian fiction genres. Dystopian? Gotcha covered in both genres as well. Set in Canada? Stop right there! It’s easy as American’s to not necessarily thing of the great worldview of how events might unfold in different countries. We can easily speak to and account for the actual impact to the world. But have we ever stopped to view how different countries might approach these events? I know I haven’t. Spoiler alert, this will come to play in book 3 of this series. I think I just assumed that it would be handled on a world wide stage and everyone would just do what we do. No egocentric at all am I? 😀 I always accounted for the world wide impact but I never thought about it from a country specific impact. Until now.
I have to thank the author for opening up my mind to the idea that world view (or impact) is not the same as how each country, or even region, might handle this unfolding of this prophecy. It was unexpected to read how the perspective that Canada, known for their easy going peaceful demeanor, could potentially react so viscerally. I think that could really speak for all us when we are pushed to reacting out of fear and even politically motivation instead of with our minds and hearts. The drawback for me though was the heavy handed on the romance. I devoured this book for the drama and suspense and even adventure with a side of romance. What I got was a book wrapped into a romance with a side of drama and suspense and adventure. I felt like world, and even country based, events were happening around this romance instead of the other way around. I felt many times that I was being told about the events and steeped in the romance. I’d rather they would have been more balanced.
That doesn’t stop me though. I’m still invested in Kingston Canada. I’m still invested in Meryn and Jesse and the rest of the group. I’m still invested in how things will unfold as we draw nearer to what we know is the end. It really is a snapshot of how the beginning of the end could play out. Another view, another take, another reminder that this world, this life is not forever. As the basis for this romance is tied out I’m hoping to find more drama and suspense and adventure in book 2 ‘The Darkness Deepens’ (though it is moniker-ed on Goodreads as ‘The Dragon Rises’). So, in it with me? See ya Wednesday! 😀
