About the Author

April Smith grew up spending summers working on her best friend’s family watermelon farm and she was one of those watermelon queens she writes about. She has her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching.

Excerpt

MORNING IN THE FIELDS IS my favorite time of the day. The sun is just about to rise, and all of the workers are fanning out to the rows of watermelons. I turn the key and hear the chug of the tractor as it comes to life. Then, I shift it into gear. The wheels roll forward as I settle onto the old, yellow seat. There are places where the fabric is missing and, in some places, duct-taped.
It’s too early to start the music just yet; but my coffee warms my insides, and I begin the slow drive down the row, careful not to crush the vines with the tractor wheels. The watermelons are coming off the vines like crazy, which is good because tomorrow is Mrs. Baron’s watermelon salsa-making day for the farmer’s market.
