Reflections

Reflections is a weekly meme hosted by Kristin of A Simply Enchanted Life and Fizzy of Fizzy Pop Collection. Every Sunday we will dig deeper in our recent reads to explore the real-life lessons within the pages. Reading the book yourself is not necessary to participate. If you would like to host your own reflection, you’re welcome to copy and paste this introduction, with the link to our pages. You may use our current or prior reflections or come up with your own.

In ‘Written in Love‘ by Kathleen Fuller, Phoebe Bontrager accidentally sends a letter to the wrong person. Jalon Chupp accidentally falls in love with Phoebe through these letters.  Jalon also accidentally finds out that Phoebe has a young son, Malachi.  Along the way Jalon bonds with Malachi over a toy yo-yo.  What was your favorite childhood toy?

The song ‘I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world’ immediately flashes into my head when I start thinking about toys.  Not to say that it was necessarily my favorite toy.  I was pretty all about the dolls, baby dolls, stuffed animals (which are sorta in the same-ish genre, barbie dolls, just dolls.  But I was more into games and books.  Books, continue to make my world go round but they were the sustenance to my soul throughout my entire life.  I started reading independently at a young age and would rather read a book than do most anything else.  In fact, I can remember more than a few times that I got in trouble in school for reading when I was supposed to be doing other things.  My other childhood love was games.  My family and I would play board games and card games most nights (especially through the winter) after dinner.  My sister and I would spend school breaks holed up on the big bed in Mom and Daddy’s room playing all the games.  Like all. the. games.  We would buy games for each other for birthdays and holidays.  And we played the games.

To this day I cannot begin to remember how we managed to devise a way to successfully play Clue with a dummy hand and the complicated coding method we devised to figure out who dunnit, where and with what.  I could be kickin’ her hinney in Monopoly to the point she’d make me feel sorry for her.  She was exceptional at playing that card.  I’d cut her some slack and she’d cut my throat.  Every. Time.   I still love books.  And games.  And have even started the love of dolls with the girls.  MooMoo has the start of a fun Barbie collection already.

Your turn!  As we move into the holiday season this week and spend time with those we love, what was a favorite childhood toy in your life?  Perhaps even one that you want to share with the next generation.
