Nikki Boyd Enters the Deadly World of Counterfeit Drugs to Find a Missing Woman
Nikki Boyd isn't usually called in on homicides; her forte is missing persons. But when a case with two murdered and two missing pops up on a quiet suburban street, she's ready to start the investigation and find missing homeowners Mac and Lucy Hudson. When the first clues lead her to the boat of her friend Tyler Grant--and another dead body--Nikki must untangle what ties Tyler to the Hudsons. The clues pull her into a deadly maze of counterfeit drugs and a killer who will stop at nothing to silence anyone who threatens his business--including Nikki.
Christy Award-winning and bestselling author Lisa Harris puts readers right into the action in this fast-paced thriller that will have them turning pages long into the night.
If you read my review of Vendetta, you know that for this series, I struggled with the audio version. You also know that I’d already queued this one as an audiobook, and I was concerned. Here’s the deal: my library didn’t have these on Libby, so I used Hoopla, with a limit of 8 books a month, so I wasn’t going to waste a loan to change my format. But . . . after this one, I am absolutely going to revisit my schedule to see if I can make the eBook work since I’m not yet queued.
Let’s tackle the audiobook for a second. This book has a lot of tension, moves pretty quickly, and is ripe for a heart-pounding read. And then, the narration itself is pretty deadpan. I get it, that’s how it’s supposed to be, but it also didn’t take me on the rollercoaster that this book’s words were ripe for. I mean, there is murder, mayhem, missing people, bombs going off for goodness sake, and I’m over here not feeling it, just hearing it. I need to feel it. I am one of those people that hear it in my head as I read it; apparently, not everyone is like that. Who knew!
I did have moments where liberties with the way a procedure would probably actually play out that was slipped under the radar, and there was some of my infamous incredulous disbelief. The romance thread features more prominent in a stoic way that does bring a thread to carry forward in the next book. Honestly, though, neither of those things bothered me so much in this book. This is a solid book with a lot of heart-pounding moments that make me love mystery/suspense books. It tells a solid story that brings threads from Nikki’s reasons for doing what she does while also setting up the next installment in the series. I’m halfway through the series and can’t wait for the last half with hopes that Nikki solves the mystery of her missing sister that drives everything about her, but also to see how her relationship with Tyler grows and changes . . . though hopefully in a natural way and not a contrived romance formula. Audio aside, this is a great book for the genre it is, and I’m totally invested.
