Sebastian Whitcombe, Viscount Willowthorpe, comes to America to experience the great Wild West for himself before it disappears for good. The adventure comes with a convenient bonus—it postpones his father’s edict that he take a wife from the British aristocracy. Sebastian isn’t so much against marriage as he is an arranged marriage to the wrong woman.
Jocelyn Overstreet hasn’t returned to her family’s eastern Idaho cattle ranch in six years. She’s far too busy managing the New York City offices of Overstreet Shipping. But when her older brother has a serious run-in with a bison, she returns to the ranch only to find the Overstreet home invaded by visitors from England, one of them a disturbingly handsome viscount who disarms her defenses at every turn.
Sebastian’s future lies in England where the Earl of Hooke is determined to choose his son a wife. New York City holds Jocelyn’s future with scant time for romance, much less marriage. The attraction between her and Sebastian seems doomed to fail.
Amidst the clash of their worlds, Sebastian and Jocelyn find that the risk of love, against all odds, might just be a risk worth taking.
To Enchant a Lady’s Heart set us up to know Sebastian and his sister Amanda, and know the anticipation of their trip to the American West. Sebastian knows he has to marry as the heir to the family estate. Sebastian isn’t against marriage, as his father believes, but he is not interested in status or dowry or ‘a match’; he is interested in love. But what happens if he falls in love in the West? How does that, potentially, change everything expected of him . . . including what he expects from himself.
At this point, I’m fully committed to the Christian Fiction Reading Challenge, which for me means all the books in a series that comes before the current book. It’s just who I am. Legalistic much? Probably. Even when it comes to romance, still all in. Here’s the deal, this book is romance with a touch of instalove and a bit of, I hate to say, enemies, so let’s say indifference to lovers. Throw in a touch of opposites with Sebastian being English aristocracy while Jocelyn is an American rancher turned businesswoman. Oh, wait there’s more! as suddenly, Papa shows up, unannounced, from England, and waffles from she’s not worthy to marry her before I die after one conversation with Jocelyn.
Despite all that, I really enjoyed this book. There was enough detail to create engagement with the scenery and the characters. Yes, a little too much tell, but there was a lot of show (I don’t know why I’m caught up in show-and-tell, but here we are). There was enough adventure to really set a good stage for the romance, and the faith threads were solid as well. I do hope we get to see the future of Jocelyn and Sebastian as they travel back to England, but I’m super excited to see how Amanda finds her Mountain Man next.
